The regular meeting was held starting at 6:00 p.m.
A thank you note was read from a former graduate who received a Ruth Creps Scholarship.
Superintendent Bergstrom presented “Superintendent Spotlight” certificates to staff and students throughout the district who have shown outstanding effort this school year.
The revised meeting agenda, May meeting minutes, and treasurer’s report were approved with no changes.
The board selected July 13, 2026 for the date of the July organizational meeting.
The 2026-27 MHSAA Membership Resolution, which allows our district to participate in post-season MHSAA-sponsored sports tournaments, was approved.
The second reading of NEOLA Vol. 40, No. 2 policy updates was approved. An additional update for Policy 6220, will have a second reading in July due to a small wording change.
Supt. Bergstrom updated the board on the progress made toward the district’s Strategic Plan:
Focus Area 1, Academics & Programs: Gather data on identified students and create data collection process to inform future teachers; Information shared with next level staff to assist with scheduling; MS/HS students will complete interest survey in the fall; New clubs started this year include Pickleball Club, Chess Club, Board Games Club, Magic the Gathering Club, Drama Club, Cooking Club (partnering with Hillside Church); Surveyed staff to gain feedback about SEL implementation for next school year.
Focus Area 2, Learning Environment & Culture: HS created a team of staff and students for input on PBIS program; Elementary/MS working on a parent flier to be share in the fall; MS/HS use MiPhy data and /or new survey data to learn where students feel safe; Elementary creates survey for 5th grade students on building and classroom safety.
Focus Area 3, Communication & Community Engagement: Review communication flow chart to describe systems currently in place; Highlight and inventory the things we do well through data collection, survey, staff feedback, test scores; Generated a list of schools, colleges, and universities we want to receive our job postings; Identify the platforms schools on our list are using for job postings.
Focus Area 4, Personnel & Leadership: Surveyed mentor/mentee teachers; Analyzed data to enhance our mentoring program.
Focus Area 5, Operations: Purchased 250 new Chromebooks in March; Granted access to Administrative Assistant for maintenance ticket system; Building walk-throughs – established priority lists for each building; Bond proposal passed!
The 2026 Tax Rate Request (Form L-4029) was approved. This is the millage request that goes to the county and township treasurers and clerks annually for summer or winter tax collection.
The 2025-26 amended budget and the 2026-27 preliminary budget were approved, after both budgets were presented at a Budget Hearing before the regular meeting.
The board approved the State Aid Note Resolution for the 2026-27 school year.
The 2026 Bond Authorizing Resolution was approved by the board and Supt. Bergstrom updated the board on the progress made regarding the sale of the 2026 Bond.
The hiring of two new teachers was approved:
Ms. Shelby Boden – 2nd grade
Ms. Amber Korman – 2nd grade
The board approved an employment contract for Mrs. Emma Garrison, elementary Social Worker, who had previously been working as a contracted service for the district.
Superintendent Bergstrom reported to the board members on the following:
- Fun end to our school year: field trips, field days, graduation, another fantastic year.
- Handbooks including revised cell phone policy will be discussed at the July meeting.
- Elementary summer school started today – 22 signed up.
- High School summer school – 14 on the list.
- Thank you to our administrative team for keeping calm, cool and collected in the month of May and helping support the teachers and students through a challenging time.

The board members commented on the following:
- Last month’s graduation was very well done and nicely organized.
- The MASB emailed out a resolution to encourage the state to pass a budget on time.
- Thank you to Becky Streeter for coming to the meeting to meet the board. She will be replacing Susan Michalsky upon her retirement in July.
- Welcome to our new elementary teachers.
- The middle school awards were very nice.
- Can we communicate to class advisors that graduation yard signs should be in school colors?
- Supt. Bergstrom always does a super job.
The board went into a closed session at 6:50 p.m. to review the superintendent’s mid-year progress.
