The regular meeting was held starting at 6:00 p.m.

The August 2022 meeting minutes and treasurer’s report were approved with no changes.

PTA Co-President Jennifer Wykes invited the board to attend their Pastries with Parents event at Heritage Park on Wednesday, Sept. 14th.

The Board approved the Section 98b and 104h Learning Goals.  These sections of law require school districts to conduct benchmark assessments of their students three times throughout the school year.

Supt. Denney updated the board on the progress made toward the board goals:

Goal #1A – Increased participation in our elementary summer school program; adjusting RTI coverage; additional Special Education/At-Risk staff; new curriculum implementation

Goal #1B – Beginning a new year of the MICIP process, which will be a continuation of last year

Goal #1C – Hired additional staff to expand elective offerings at the HS; ongoing review of dual enrollment and middle college opportunities; increased remedial support opportunities

Goal #1D – Currently reviewing reasons for students leaving; filled every teaching vacancy

Goal #1E – New PTA and Booster officers; bringing back many events we have held in the past

Goal #1F – Whole Child Initiatives are now a piece of our improvement planning process

Goal 2A – Continuing with electrical upgrades and A/C installation; planning for next school year

Goal #2B – Ongoing assessment of devices and needs; Used John George grant to purchase iPads, SMART Boards, and science equipment; supplement with devices from Consumers Energy

Goal #2C – Ongoing discussion with township and village regarding police coverage

The board congratulated Amber Bushinski and Megan Thurston for receiving tenure after receiving three consecutive highly effective evaluations after their fourth year of teaching.

Superintendent Denney reported to the board members on the following:

  • The new school year has gotten off to a great start.  It’s good to see normal crowds for ABC Night, back to school assemblies, etc.  Thank you to all staff for the great start.

The board members commented on the following:

  • It’s a good sign that everything has seemed to start smoothly this year.
  • The JCSBA organizational meeting will be held September 27th
  • The board enjoys the building board reports.
  • Thank you to the PTA for the work they do.
