The regular meeting was held starting at 6:00 p.m.
Superintendent Bergstrom presented “Superintendent Spotlight” certificates to students and an employee throughout the district who have shown outstanding effort this school year.
The meeting agenda, April meeting minutes, and treasurer’s report were approved with no changes.
Because of the rules regarding the JCISD biennial election, which calls for the board to choose a candidate in two separate meetings, the regular meeting was suspended and a special meeting was called to order. The board discussed the candidates who are running for the JCISD board, as well as our board’s representative and alternate who will cast our district’s vote at the election, then closed the special meeting in order to reconvene the regular meeting.
The board approved the JCISD Biennial Election Resolution designating Elizabeth Scott as our district’s voting delegate and Tim Evans as the alternate delegate. The resolution also names Shari Hein and Erin E. Slater as our board’s choice to fill two six-year seats on the JCISD board. The election will take place on June 2, 2025.
The board approved the repair of the roof on the maintenance building at the middle/high school.
A portion of the cost for renovation of the high school kitchen was approved by the board so that the project can get started as soon as possible after school is out. Mark Hubbard will be acting as the general contractor, and will also be getting quotes for parts of the project, which will be approved at the June board meeting.
The purchase of two new milk coolers for the high school kitchen was approved.
The board approved our district’s school year calendar for 2025-26.
The board appproved the second reading of NEOLA Vol. 39, No. 2, policy 5460, in order to update that policy regarding graduation requirements for students, so that our policy will be aligned with the FAFSA Challenge Grant fund requirements.
The board reviewed the first reading of the remaining NEOLA Vol. 39, No. 2 policy updates; the second reading will take place at the June board meeting.
The JCISD Resolution in Approval of the JCISD 2026 FY Preliminary Budget was approved.
The contract extensions of the Building and Grounds Supervisor, Transportation Supervisor, Administrative Assistant, and Business Services Assistant were approved for a period of two years, through June 30, 2027.
The board approved the hiring of Mrs. Courtney Toteff as a Special Education teacher for the 2025-26 school year. Mrs. Toteff is a graduate of Hanover-Horton, as well as our current middle school track coach.
The resignations of Mrs. Tracy Ellison and Mr. William Jones were accepted with regret. Both teachers are retiring at the end of this school year after long careers at Hanover-Horton.
Superintendent Bergstrom reported to the board members on the following:
- Last week was teacher and staff appreciation week. Staff was treated with a cookout, PTA luncheon, and treats. Thank you to everyone for the little things they do that add up. Everyone steps up to make things happen.
- The parking lot lights have had issues and have been repaired several times since the wire was cut during construction a few years ago. Repairs to permanently fix the lights will be starting soon.
- The high school concert will be Thursday at 7 pm and the middle school concert will be Mond 6 pm.
- Spring sports are having very successful seasons with softball, baseball, and golf all in the running for conference titles. Boys track tied for Cascades Conference champs, with regionals this Friday at East Jackson.
- Upcoming senior events include seniors’ last day tomorrow, Baccalaureate on May 18, Honors Night on May 22, and graduation on May 23. Virtual students’ graduation will be on May 29.
- Other events taking place before the end of the year are field trips, 5th grade visit, 8th grade tours of the high school and Career Center, 8th grade dance, 5th grade celebration, year-end picnics, and field days.
- The last day of school is June 6.
- The next board meeting will be on the third Monday, June 16.
The board members commented on the following:
- There are lots of fun events coming up. The school year is going too fast!
- The board is excited for the new summer projects.
- Thank you to Tim Evans and Mark Hubbard for their knowledge and input.
- The superintendent evaluation will be done in June, and going forward will be done in June and December.
- We need to make sure we’re looking closely at the budget and making adjustments as necessary.
- We have an exceptional staff who are very appreciated.
