The regular meeting was held starting at 6:00 p.m.

Board of Education officers for 2026 were elected as follows:

President – Chris Blackledge

Vice President – Kristin Flick

Secretary – Elizabeth Scott

Treasurer – Leon Densmore

January is School Board Recognition Month. Superintendent Bergstrom expressed her appreciation to the board members for the time and dedication they put in as members of the board.  A certificate and gift were given to the board members.

The board recognized those student athletes who received fall athletic awards.

Superintendent Bergstrom presented “Superintendent Spotlight” certificates to students throughout the district who have shown outstanding effort this school year.

Student Council is planning SnowFest Spirit Week activities.  Hallway decorating will take place over the weekend of Jan. 24-25.  The theme this year is “biomes.”  He-Man Volleyball will be on Jan. 29.  The SnowFest ceremony will be held during halftime of the basketball game on Jan. 30, with the dance following on Saturday, Jan. 31.

The board approved the Resolution for the Bond Proposal for the May 2026 election.  This will be for a proposed bond of 0.43 mill for a -0- net increase over the prior tax levy.

The annual 7th grade field trip to Mackinac was approved.  The girls will go on the trip on May 13-14, and the boys will go on the trip on May 14-15.  Students will study Michigan history, natural habitats, ecosystems, and water quality of northern Michigan, along with visiting Wilderness State Park and Mackinac Island.

Mrs. Melissa Duffrin, Elementary Assistant Principal, applied for and received grant funds for the competitive 35m grant (The Committee for Literacy Achievement/HQ Literacy Materials Grant).  Our district was awarded $119,130 toward the purchase of an elementary literacy curriculum.  Our ELA team was able to sample two different curricula from the state-approved list.  The staff chose the Wit & Wisdom (K-5 Core ELA program and Geodes (K-3 Decodable Texts).  These materials will be ordered and implemented as soon as possible.

Superintendent Bergstrom reported to the board members on the following:

  • Winter sports are in full swing.
  • Snowfest will be on January 30th.
  • Monday, Jan. 19 will be a professional development day.
  • The Athletic Boosters Draw Down will be on February 7.
  • The music department is having their 2nd annual mattress sale on Sunday, February 1 from 11-4 in the auxiliary gym.
  • Parent/teacher conferences are being held on Thursday February 5th, with a new parent invitation format for the middle/high school.

The board members commented on the following:

  • The board appreciates the School Board Recognition Month gifts and certificates.
  • Congratulations to the football team who will be honored at the state capitol for their fine season this past fall.  The board recognizes the positive contribution that coaches make for our students.
  • The curriculum being purchased with the 35m grant sounds amazing.
  • The board is looking forward to the proposed projects on the list for the upcoming bond election.
