Middle school football: The 8th grade football team defeated previously unbeaten Vandercook Lake Wednesday evening 40-14. The Comets opened the scoring after an early Vandercook fumble with a 20 yard pass from Garrett Gumper to David Murine. Trent Hocter added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. On the next Comets possession, Basil Hampton ran 58 yards around end. Hocter’s kick made it 14-0. In the 2nd quarter Hampton scampered 9 yards to give the Comets a 20-0 lead. Hocter went 9 yards with 23 seconds remaining in the half to extend the lead to 26-0 at the break.
The 3rd quarter began with Gumper running 79 yards after a strong defensive stand. Hocter converted the extra point to give the Comets a 33-0 lead. Hampton added another 18 yard run sandwiched between two Vandercook scores to give the Comets a 40-14 victory. The 3-0 Comets will face Napoleaon at home next Wednesday.
The 7th grade team battled Vandercook but came up short as the Jayhawks took a lead late in the 4th quarter and then added another score in the final seconds to give them an 18-8 win.
