Hanover-Horton fought and clawed Friday night against league-leading Grass Lake Warriors but came up short 27-12. The Comets had 3 turnovers in the first 15 minutes of the game that allowed Grass Lake to build a 20-0 lead. The Comets got going on a 55 yard run by Austin Kilgore with 4:09 to go before half. Grass Lake answered with a 30 yard run by Joe Vuccolo to give the Warriors a 27-6 lead at the break.
Hanover-Horton began the 3rd quarter with a long drive that was capped with a Frank Bird to Evan Harold 12 yard touchdown pass which closed out the scoring. The Comets had their chances to cut into the lead even more. Late in the 3rd, the Comets drove to Grass Lakes 5 yard line. A sweep that lost 4 yards were followed by three incomplete passes.
Bird finished 7-18 for 82 yards. Kilgore finished with 124 yards rushing while Harold had 4 catches for 46 yards and Christian Beneke had 2 receptions for 26 yards. Kilgore led the defense with 9 tackles. Skylar Canales added 8 tackles while Chandler Vance and Harold each had 5 1/2. Beneke added an interception for the Comets.
The Comets return home next week for parents night against East Jackson.
