Michigan Merit Exam
For Juniors:
All juniors in the state of Michigan are required to take the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) in the spring of their junior year. This year the MME will be March 6, 7 and 8, 2012. The MME consists of several components:
1) ACT exam with 5 sections including; Math Science, Reading, English and Writing.
2) WorkKeys Exam with 3 sections including: Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Locating Information..
3) Michigan Developed Tests including: 3 tests in Math, Science and Social Studies.
The MME is a very important test for the following reasons:
1) The ACT is a college admission test. ACT test scores from the MME can be used for college admission purposes. This is a great opportunity for students to take the ACT for free.
2) ACT scores are used for course placement at college. It measures college readiness.
3) Some scholarships and some financial aid have ACT score requirements.
4) ACT scores are used for NCAA eligibility for sports in college.
5) Many students who never considered college do so after receiving encouraging ACT scores.
6) WorkKeys measures workforce readiness. Students could be eligible for a nationally recognized work force readiness credential.
7) Students, educators and parents can evaluate students’ progress towards college and workforce readiness so that interventions can be made while students are still in high school.
8) MME scores are used to evaluate Adequate Yearly Progress as defined under the No Child Left Behind Act.
9) Scores provide feedback for school improvement and curriculum development.
These are just some of the many reasons students should take the MME seriously. There are many ways students can prepare for the test. One way is to talk upper level math, science and English courses. Students should review their PLAN test results from last year to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. Students can take practice tests online and in paper form. For more information on ACT resources, see the "ACT" link on the counseling home page.

For Seniors:
In the summer of 2008 there was a change in the State School Aid Act related to the MME(Public Act 268 of 2008). Michigan law now says a student may not take the MME more than once. Some exceptions exist. For the latest news regarding this change in law, please visit http://www.michigan.gov/mme.
