Board of Education Information

2010-2011 SCHOOL DISTRICT GOALS

School district goals are tied into the school improvement process. School improvement committees, administration and the board of education determine goals for the district. 


BOARD OF EDUCATION GOALS

Each year the Board of Education defines their goals for the district. 
The 2010-2011 goals are:

1.  The Hanover-Horton School Board will foster an academically rich environment that strives to meet the needs of every student. 

Strategies:

  • The district will establish procedures for accessing and utilizing data through Data Director so that more instructional decisions utilize actual data for their source.
  •  The Board will continue to monitor academic success through review of MEAP reports, ACT and MME results, AYP, and annual report cards. 
  • The district will continue to identify new ways to support our increasing at-risk and Title I population. 
  • The Board will continue to investigate new funding opportunities to assist in the expansion of academic opportunities for all students. 
  • The district will develop special education instructions strategies and support to narrow the achievement gap between “all students and students with disabilities.” 
  • The district will make revisions to the School Improvement Framework that will redefine and expand the role that it is currently serving in the district, including at least one board member, parent(s), and community member or student as appropriate. 
  • The district will identify successful graduates and investigate ways that these students could become resources to our current students. 
  • The district will identify and provide opportunities for the community to participate in the educational process in all of our schools. 
  • The district will participate in programs that positively impact students, i.e.: Human Relations Camp, Project Wisdom, Character Education, Ninth Grade Orientation, etc.
  • The district will participate in programs that promote: community service, school spirit, sportsmanship, diversity, safety, substance abuse, honesty, anti-bullying, and elimination of sexual harassment. 
  • The Board of Education will continue to prioritize funds in order to  support the professional development of high quality educators. 
  • The Board of Education will make a commitment to fund the hiring of the highest quality teachers and administrators.                     

Evidence of Success:

  • All buildings receive an A or a B on their state report card.
  • All buildings make AYP in all subgroups and all subgroups exceed the state average.
  • We graduate 95% of the students that enter our high school in every class, every year. 
  • All of our MEAP and MME scores exceed the state average. 
  • The ACT Composite Score exceeds the state average. 
  • Alumni are actively involved in our district in enhancing the learning opportunities for our students. 
  • Students and staff feel that they are learning and working in a safe environment.
  • The Hanover-Horton Schools and our students are respected throughout the county because of their academic and athletic success. 
  • Community members feel positive about what is going on in our school district.
  • Our students are perceived as positive contributing members of our Community.
  • Staff throughout the district are vested in the academic and athletic success of our students and see the education of our students as a “team” effort. 
  • The results of our MI PHY Survey show an increase in positive behaviors.
  • The newspaper features stories about the positive behavior of our Hanover-Horton.
  • 95% of our graduates go on to some type of post secondary education.
  • The district will celebrate the longevity of their teachers and administrators. 

2.  The Hanover-Horton School Board will provide support and resources to develop and maintain the investment our community has made in our district facilities. 

Strategies:

  • The district will continue to implement and document preventative maintenance for both facilities and grounds.          
  • The Board will continue to review current district facilities and make   long and short-term recommendations for improvement including: classrooms, transportation, athletics, technology and recreational needs. 
  • The Board will prioritize future construction projects to meet the needs that are identified by the community and district staff. 
  • The technology committee will review and update the current technology plan and make recommendations to the board for revision and implementation. 
  • The district will continue to be in full compliance with all health, wellness and safety mandates. 
  • The Board will prioritize expenditures that impact the health and safety of staff and students.
  • The Board will closely monitor and encourage the growth of Schools of Choice enrollment to limit and/or eliminate the decline in enrollment. 
  • The district will look at ways to continue to contain rapidly rising costs in energy and transportation. 

Evidence of Success:

  • Annually the district has a community survey that has at least 100respondents to help prioritize district needs. 
  • The district maintains a balanced budget and fund equity of at least 10%.  
  • Annual budget reflects both short term and long term commitment to building and grounds maintenance. 
  • Technology plan is updated and submitted to JCISD and MDE.
  • District is in full compliance with all of the state and federal health and safety mandates. 
  • The community feels that our buildings look well maintained and cared for when they drive by and/or visit a school.
  • Transportation runs rarely exceed 50 minutes.
  • The district continues to have excellent bus and health department  inspections.

3.  The Hanover-Horton Board of Education will hold itself to the highest standard possible out of respect to the school and community that we serve.

 Strategies:

  • The members of the Board will participate in education opportunities and workshops offered to them.
  • The members of the Board will see themselves as contributing members of the education community. 
  • The board will develop an orientation packet that will provide information to new board members about the work and expectations of board members. 

Evidence of Success:

  • All Board members take the CBA-101 class.
  • Board members are encouraged to continue taking classes toward CBA  Certification.
  • Board members attend 75-80% of the meetings held each year. 
  • Board members are able to communicate goals and missions of the district to the community. 
  • Board meetings operate in an efficient and effective manner. 
  • Board members speak with one voice.
