Board of Education Meeting in Review, May 15, 2017

The Board of Education and Superintendent Denney recognized the Junior Medal of Honor recipients for April.  Also this evening many more outstanding students for various reasons were recognized.  The Board and Superintendent Denney were able to recognize our Winter Sports Academic Award recipients, Lions Club Peace Poster Contest winner, Lions Club local region and international awards for Leos of the Year, Young Poets Contest winners, the Jackson County Branch NAACP Poetry Contest winners, and the recipients of the Jackson County Art Teachers Fair Awards.

Chris Hobson informed the Board that tonight was the last Junior Medal of Honor recognitions for this school year.  They are currently looking into some changes for next year.  Jennifer French wanted to publicly acknowledge the appreciation and thanks she had for the wonderful senior breakfast that was hosted by the Hillside Church.  The Church did a phenomenal job!

The Board voted to have Tim Evans as the Designee and Gary Schuette as the Alternate to represent our Board at the Jackson County Intermediate School District Board of Education Biennial Election.  JCISD has three candidates for three positions all running unopposed.  After the regular board meeting this evening was adjourned, a Special Board meeting went into session to make the second motion to approve what was currently approved at the regular meeting earlier this evening.  This was a legal technicality that we had to fulfill.

Every year the JCISD must submit its proposed budget to each constituent district for review and a resolution must be passed to either approve or disapprove of the presented budget.  Our Board approved the JCISD proposed budget for 2017-2018.

A tentative 2017-2018 School Calendar for the district was approved by the Board

This year’s summer construction projects approved were electrical service upgrades, LED Lighting, Middle School Entryway, HS/MS Roof Coating, carpet in approximately four classrooms, Concrete in the transportation area.  All of these items are covered under our Sinking Fund, not having to diminish our general fund.

Our Notice of Hearing on Proposed Budget for the 2017-2018 was approved.  This hearing will be posted and will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, June 12th prior to our regular meeting in the Library Media Center.

On May 2, our community supported our need for a $250,000 school building and technology bond, to be adjusted with the Sinking Fund so as to not levy more than the original Sinking Fund amount.  The board this evening has approved the Authorization Resolution of Issuance of Bonds for the $250,000 2017 School Building and Technology Bonds.  This authorization allows us to seek bids on the bonds.

With regrets, the Board accepted the resignation of Dawn Howe, effective the end of this school year.  She will be relocating to a cooler climate.  We wish her well.

The administrative and supervisory contracts have been extended for another year with no financial changes.

The Superintendent Contract also was extended for an additional year with no financial changes.

The Board went into closed session for the discussion of negotiated items.
