The Board of Education and Superintendent Denney recognized many talented students. First recognized were the Jr. Medal of Honor recipients for the month of April. Next honorees were three of our female bowlers that received various recognitions from the 2016 Michigan High School Bowling Coaches Association. Many talented artists were recognized for various competitions through The Jackson County Conservation Earth Day Art Contest, The Jackie Robinson Art Contest and both our middle and high school students were recognized for their talents through the Jackson County Art Teachers Art Show.

Our Student Council Representative informed the Board the senior class was going to wear their caps and gowns and parade through the elementary halls one last time on Tuesday and enjoy one last story time.

Superintendent Denney informed the Board that the discussions of the Preschool program between the union and administration were progressing and hopefully will have more information to present to them at the June meeting. In the meantime, registrations are still ongoing.

Isaac Cottrell, high school principal, was present this evening to show the Board some of the processes of our seniors portfolio. A sample of one of our senior’s portfolios was presented in an electronic format which was very impressive. A Portfolio Grading Analysis sheet was also explained.

The Board has approved replacing the teacher’s computers using our At-Risk funds which are dedicated funds and are only able to be used on certain things. The teacher’s computers are old, they are not able to support the new technologies used by teachers. This purchase is consistent with our technology plan.

The Board reviewed two updates to our NEOLA policies which were approved as first readings.

Summer Projects and bids were presented to the board. Of the many projects needed, the most urgent and sensible for this year is mulching and edging for the upgrades at the elementary playground, carpeting for the Elementary hallway, approximately 3 classrooms within the district to have carpet replaced, roof refurbishing at the MS/HS complex, sealing/painting of the MS/HS curbs, exterior walkway from the elementary cafeteria, soccer field drainage upgrade. Mark is still getting bids on a canopy for the concession stand which was dictated to us by the health department. All projects should be covered by the sinking fund except for the mulch at the elementary playground.

The Board approved the annual notice to the public of a hearing on our proposed budget for the upcoming year. The hearing will be on June 20, 2016 in the Library Media Center at 6 p.m., just prior to the Board’s regular meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Every year the Jackson County Intermediate School Board presents their proposed budget to the school districts within the county. Each district must pass a resolution in support for or disapproval of their proposed budget prior to June 1st. The Board passed a resolution in support of the ISD proposed budget.

Superintendent Denney reminded everyone that Senior Honors was Monday, May 23 at 6:30, and graduation ceremony will be on Friday, May 27, 7 p.m. at the Potter Center.
